Fort Street Open Door

Serving the poor and Homeless in downtown Detroit

What is The Open Door?
Every Thursday, Fort Street Presbyterian Church in downtown Detroit literally opens their doors to serve over 400 hearty meals to people who are homeless or cannot afford food.  Each person fed also leaves with sandwiches for later in the day.   In addition, clothing, showers, medical services and haircuts are available and a social worker provides counseling for assistance benefits.  Job posting are made available, too.

Why do they need our help?
With your help, lives can be touched or changed!  Visit their website to see examples of how God has been working through Fort Street volunteers!

When can I help?
First Presbyterian Church of Farmington sends volunteers on the fourth Thursday of each month to help serve a meal or work in the clothing closet. Volunteers meet at the church at 7:30 am to carpool and return by 1 pm.  If you're not available that Thursday, you can still help on other Thursdays.  Call  313-961-4533 for details.

What do volunteers do?
People are also needed from 8:30 - 11:00 a.m. to serve food as well as distribute clothing and shoes. They also welcome volunteers to take part in their 8:30 am Praise Service each Thursday.
