South Oakland ShelterBreaking the cycle of homelessness...
What is SOS?
South Oakland Shelter is a temporary, rotating shelter for the homeless, providing beds and meals for up to 30 individuals 52 weeks a year at 52 different churches and other facilities in south Oakland County.
When do we host?
First Presbyterian Church of Farmington hosts the shelter for one week in January each year.
Why do we host?
Because it makes a difference. Yes, it's a lot of work. Yes, we feel their sense of discouragement and despair. But nevertheless, this place begins to be filled with joy-- the raised voices of laughter of those being brought home to God's house mingled with the voices of those opening God's house for the needy.
Who is needed to help?
Everyone. Approximately 35 volunteers are required each day to provide transportation; prepare, serve and clean up dinner and breakfast; prepare bag lunches; do laundry during the week and a lot of laundry on the last Sunday; serve as reception hosts; and stay at the church as overnight hosts. In addition, a set up team and tear down team are needed on both Sundays. Sign up sheets for specific tasks are posted on the bulletin board in the narthex (lobby) several weeks in advance of our host week.
